CHROMESTHESIA

Hobby Project Emerged by Experimenting With Unreal Engine 5
Audio Sensitive Ambient Lightening Design Inspired by Chromesthesia

The Chromesthesia project is produced for interactive performance halls that use light as mood and ambient control parameter and increase immersion. The Chromesthesia project was inspired by
synesthesia that evokes a visual experience from an acoustic perception.

The design works by analyzing the Constant Q and Amplitude values of the processed sound in real time to manipulate the color and intensity of the ambient light. To illustrate, as the system works, the room will be completely dark at a quiet moment, and the room will be illuminated entirely when the sound is loudest. On the other hand, the color of the light can be programmed to create a merriment of colors according to the variable Constant Q value, as well as making linear interpolation between two colors, affecting the feeling of the environment.

Real-time adaptive architecture needs real-time interactions, and realtime interactions are central to the user-space experience. Recently, architecture has started to be defined as the user-space experience and interaction rather than the user’s experience of the space. In this context, “Chromesthesia” can be considered as one of the first interaction experiments of the experience design process of the future of architecture.
